Signs Your Website Is Costing You Customers
Most businesses don't notice their website has become a problem — it's still online, it still looks fine at a glance, and nobody's complaining. But a website doesn't have to be broken to be losing you customers. It just has to be slightly worse than the alternative your visitor clicks to next. Here's what to check.
It Takes Too Long to Load
Every extra second a page takes to load pushes more visitors to leave before they've even seen what you offer, and Google factors load speed into how you rank in the first place. If your site feels sluggish on your own phone using mobile data, assume it feels worse to a first-time visitor with no patience and no loyalty to your brand yet.
It Doesn't Work Properly on Mobile
More than half of Australian web traffic is on a phone, so a site that was only ever tested on a desktop monitor is effectively untested. Watch for text you have to zoom in to read, buttons too small or close together to tap accurately, menus that don't open properly, or forms that are painful to fill in with a thumb. Each one is a customer deciding it's not worth the effort.
There's No Clear Next Step
A visitor who lands on your homepage should never have to hunt for how to contact you, request a quote, or buy. If your call-to-action is buried below several scrolls, hidden in a generic "Learn More" link, or missing from key pages entirely, you're relying on visitors to do the work of figuring out what you want them to do — and most won't bother.
The Design Looks Dated
Fairly or not, people judge credibility on appearance in the first few seconds. A site with cramped layouts, stretched or low-quality images, mismatched fonts, or a look that hasn't changed since it launched signals that the business behind it might be just as out of date — even if that's not true.
It's Not Showing Up in Search
If you can't find your own business by searching what you do plus your suburb or city, most of your potential customers can't either. Missing page titles and descriptions, no local business information, thin content, and slow load times all quietly work against your search rankings, often without any single obvious symptom.
What to Do About It
None of these issues need a full rebuild to fix, but they're worth an honest audit rather than a guess. If the list above sounds familiar, it may be time for a redesign — our Web Design & Development service covers exactly this: fast, mobile-first sites built with SEO in mind from day one, starting at $1,997 as a one-time build. And if you're still weighing up whether a redesign, a rebuild, or something bigger is the right move, our guide on how much a website costs in Australia is a good next read.
