How Much Does a Website Cost in Australia in 2026?

"How much does a website cost?" is one of the first questions almost every business asks us, and it's a fair one — quotes for the exact same brief can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands, which makes it hard to know what's actually reasonable.

What Affects Website Pricing

A handful of factors explain most of the price difference between quotes:

  • Custom design vs template. A site built around your brand costs more upfront than a pre-made theme, but usually looks and converts better.
  • Number of pages and features. A 5-page brochure site is a very different job to a 20-page site with e-commerce, bookings, or a member area.
  • SEO and speed work. Building search optimisation and Core Web Vitals performance in from the start costs more than bolting it on later, but it's far more effective.
  • Who's doing the work. A freelancer, an agency, and an overseas outsourced team all price very differently for the same brief, and the gap isn't always about quality — it's about overheads and process.

Typical Price Ranges in Australia

As a general guide (not a quote — every project is different): a straightforward small-business website with a handful of pages typically starts somewhere in the low thousands, while a custom-designed site with more pages, e-commerce, or app-style functionality moves into the mid-to-high thousands. Fully custom software or SaaS platforms are usually scoped and quoted individually, since the work varies too much to price off a menu.

For reference, our own Web Design & Development packages start at $1,997 as a one-time build, with a custom site-plus-app tier from $3,997 — you can see exactly what's included at each level on our pricing page.

One-Time Cost vs Ongoing Costs

Building a website is normally a one-time cost — you pay once and own the result. Where people get caught out is assuming that's the only cost forever. After launch, a site still needs hosting, security updates, and the occasional content change, which is why many agencies (including us) offer an optional monthly Website Care Plan rather than bundling maintenance into the build price whether you want it or not.

How to Choose the Right Website Partner

Price alone tells you very little. Before you decide, it's worth asking any potential partner:

  • What exactly is included, and what counts as a paid extra later?
  • Will the site be built with SEO and speed in mind from day one, or added afterwards?
  • Do you own the finished website outright, including the code and content?
  • What happens after launch if something breaks or you need a change?

A cheaper quote that skips SEO fundamentals or locks you into a subscription just to keep your own site online usually ends up costing more in the long run.
