How to Choose a Web Development Agency in Australia: A No-Nonsense Checklist
Every agency's website says they're professional, experienced, and results-driven — which makes none of that useful for actually telling them apart. Here's what to check instead, before you sign anything.
Do They Show Real Work?
Ask to see actual projects, not just polished case study slides. A legitimate agency can point you to live sites or apps they've built and talk specifically about what they did — not vague claims about "driving results" with nothing to back it up.
Who Owns the Finished Product?
This is the question most people forget to ask, and it matters more than price. Some agencies build on proprietary platforms or retain effective control of the code, hosting, or domain — meaning you're technically locked in even if you "own" the site on paper. Ask directly: if we part ways, do we walk away with everything, fully transferable?
How Do They Price, and What's NOT Included?
A cheap quote that excludes hosting, basic SEO, or post-launch support isn't actually cheap — it's a smaller quote with the real cost deferred. Ask for a clear breakdown of exactly what's included, and specifically what counts as a billable extra once the project starts.
What Happens After Launch?
Launch day isn't the finish line — a site still needs updates, backups, and occasional support. Find out whether ongoing care is offered, what it costs, and whether it's optional or bundled in whether you want it or not.
Are They Actually Contactable?
Before signing anything, send a real question and see how long it takes to get a real answer. How an agency communicates during the sales process is usually a fair preview of how they'll communicate once you're a paying client.
Red Flags to Walk Away From
Vague pricing with no written scope, reluctance to show real past work, pressure to sign quickly, and no clear answer on code/content ownership are all reasons to keep looking. A good agency will happily answer every question above without getting defensive about it.
